MEETUPS : August (np)

PROJECT : My main aim is to publish a third collection of poems, the last one going all the way back to 2005 and now out of print. I have many poems to choose from, spanning many years, about a third published in magazines and anthologies. Failing the collection, I may try for several pamphlets.

I also have remnants of a novel I keep tinkering with and would like to wrap up one way or another.

QUOTE :  ‘There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.’ Leonard Cohen.

‘Poetry is the music of being human.’ Carol Ann Duffy

PROGRESS REPORT :  I have put together a pamphlet-sized selection of poems to enter in the Poetry Business Pamphlet Competition, working title Life Drawings.

I am renewing efforts to send poems out to magazines, anthologies and competitions. I have three forthcoming in the North, one in Acumen and one in Antiphon at present.

August update: I have entered a couple of competitions this year. I was commended in the Ware Poets Comp. judged by Hannah Lowe and ‘Horrible Haircuts of Childhood’ appears in their competition anthology. Also, I was shortlisted in the Poetry Business Pamphlet Competition and won 2nd prize in the Wordsworth Trust Single Poem prize as a follow-on to that.

I completed a short eco-poetry course with Fiona Benson via the Poetry School and have attended some inspiring workshops at the Bodmin Moor Poetry Festival with Rachael Allen in May and at Ledbury Festival, where I got to work with my favourite poet, Tony Hoagland, who also gave an inspiring inspiring talk.

I am currently helping to organise the Exeter Poetry Festival and will be running a Poetry Reading workshop there, looking at poems by some of our performers, including Kei Miller and Emily Berry. Then I’m off to Lumb Bank in October for an Arvon retreat with Maurice Riordan and Kathryn Maris.
